Token Ring (TR) Token ring has become the IEEE standard 802.5. It was develop by IBM for STP. IBM type 1 cabling. TR is available for speeds of 4Mbps and 16Mbps and the bits get encoding using Differential Manchester encoding, the typical maximum frame size is 4500 bytes but same implementation allow larger frame sizes. Each card has and unique 48 bits ( 6 Bytes) address similar to Ethernet. The station are connected in a start configuration an are directly attached to wiring concentrator called MAU or Multy Station Access Units. Token Ring Managment each ring has a node that becomes the monitor, the monitor's job is to monitor all the frames including he token. The token is a three bytes long and contains a start delimiter byte, an access control byte and an end delimiter byte. The monitor sets a reserved bit in every frame that passes. Any frame with the bit already set is removed and a new token is generated by the monitor |
